One of Europe's most active drummer/percussionists is Paal Nilssen-Love. A Norwegian, Nilssen-Love is a world traveler who's involvements in a staggering number of projects makes one wonder how he finds time to sleep! He's closely associated with saxophonists Frode Gjerstad, Peter Brotzmann, and Ken Vandermark, but through his own PNL label and a host of other labels he has recorded with a veritable who's who of modern improv, both in acoustic, electronic, and unclassifiable settings. Today's show will present 6 recordings featuring his drumming.
First Up is the quartet of Frode Gjerstad on alto saxophone & clarinets, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Amit Sen on cello, Paal Nilssen-Love on drums in a piece titled "Four Strings" from their FMR release "The Cello Quartet".
Ex guitarist Terrie and drummer/percussionist Paal Nilssen-Love met in the Jottem Studio in Wormerveer, NL, to record an album of rugged and skronky improvisations for an album titled "Hurgu!" on Nilssen-Love's PNL label. This track is titled "Harar".
Paal Nilssen-Love has been one of legendary Free Jazz saxophonist Peter Brotzmann's drummers of choice. Here we hear the two in a duo performing live in Norway from their Smalltown Superjazzz album "Sweetsweat". The track is titled "Never Enough".
A more recent release on Nilssen-Love's PNL label is the quartet of saxophonist Sakata, Akira, bassist Fred Lonberg-Holm, electrict guitarist Ketil Gutvik and Paal Nilssen-Love himself. The track is titled "When a Women Ascends The Stairs" from their album "The Cliff Of Time".
Another duo, this time on Norway's Rune Grammofon label, finds Nilssen-Love performing with guitarist James Plotkin for a dark, beautiful, and sometime chaotic album of free improvisation. This is the title track from their "Death Rattle" album.
We finish today's show with pure Paal, a solo album titled "27 Years Later" that presents an incredibly diverse solo set at the Forum, Norway during the 2002 Molde International Jazz Festival. The track is titled simply "Part I".
