It's been a busy week at Squidco, with notable new releases from The Uneven Eleven (Charles Hayward, Guy Seger, and Kawabata Makoto); two new releases on Relative Pitch--Susan Alcorn's lovely duo with Michael Formanek on bass, and Matthew Shipp's sophisticated chamber trio with frequent collaborators Michael Bisio & Mat Maneri.
There are also 4 much-anticipated releases on Hatology that arrived on Friday. Two are remastered reissues, Anthony Braxton's Quartet release (Santa Cruz) 1993 1st Set, and Cecil Taylors Garden restored to its original performance order. Two new releases on Hatology feature the beautiful and lyrically complex Alluring Prospects from Marco von Orelli's Quintet; and a solo release from pianist Michel Wintsch titled Roof Fool. Wintsch ties the two new releases together, as he is a part of von Orelli's quintet. Hat Hut continues to innovate and restore essential parts of the catalog, which we admire and recommend to our customers.
You'll also see new releases from Palestine Charlemagne & Rhys Chatham, the first vinyl issued from their earlier triple CD on Sub Rosa; and the amazing trio of Chris Corsano, Okkyung Lee & Bill Nace performing live at The Stone in NYC; the latter is quite limited, so if you're interested in that one you might want to jump on it!
Last, Matt Starling aka Matt Dixon has issued a Dorian Reeds, a lesser known work from Terry Riley around this "In C" period, performed with a brass ensemble. It's a hypnotic work that rewards the listener through shifting and ecstatic variation. Starling previously issued the Salt Lake Electric Ensemble's version of the more famous Riley work "In C", which was extremely well received by Squidco customers.
This week we completed the cataloging work on several Shhpuma titles, which you can see in our "New Releases" section of our homepage. Shhpuma is a sub-label of Clean Feed, and the same great taste that the label applies to modern creative jazz goes into this label. Most of the releases on the label involve electroacoustic or experimental forms, or unusual approaches to music that are tangential and of interest to improv fans. Personal favorites are the duo of Fred Frith & Helen Mira (the latter also has a fascinating release with field recording/organized sound artist Ernst Karel); the genre-defying duo of Norberto Lobo / Joao Lobo no Oba Loba; and the delicate and beautiful duo of Joana Sa & Luis Jose Martins on Almost a Song. All of the releases on the label are well defined and of interesting aspects, and it's only the fear of gushing on each that keeps me from listing the merits of each. I encourage readers to check out the audio samples for each release on the label.
Squidco Wilmington area customers, come out on Saturday, April 4 @ 8:30 to hear Jacob Wick performing solo, with saxophonist Crowmeat Bob opening the show. Click here to join our Facebook event.
Another set of Leo titles have been added to our used section, although their condition is actually new but unsealed. These were picked up from another distributor looking to reduce older stock, and our pricing Most of them have only 1 or 2 copies, so if you see something of interest you might want to pick it up now, as it's unlikely that we'll get additional copies.
Saturday, April 18, Record Store Day is fast approaching! Squidco doesn't carry a large number of RSD titles, as most of them fall far from our catalog. Here are the titles we're anticipating to carry, though we can't take pre-orders for them as it breaks the pledge we're required to sign, and it's possible that we might be shorted by our distributor (which is what happened with a couple of titles last year).
Brian Eno: My Squelchy Life [VINYL] (LP-ENORSD-2015)
Captain Beefheart and The Magic Band: Rough Raw and Amazing [VINYL 2 LPs] (LP-OZITD-8024)
Sun Ra: Planets of Life or Death: Amiens '73 [VINYL] (LP-STRUT-123)
Arto Lindsay: Encylcopedia of Arto (LP-NS-055)
Kullrusk "Spring Spring Spring Spring Spring" (MMPLP042) red 180g vinyl
We're planning a celebration in our physical store during the afternoon, which includes a live electro/experimental performance; local music preacher John Baptist testifying for Vinyl records, a listening session of odd and unique vinyl; selected titles from our DVD collection viewed in our Squid Theater; and discounts on our large collection of used and promo copies that are not listed online. If you're in the region on April 18th stop by and help us celebrate the day!
Last, The new Emanem titles have shipped to us from Spain, which is where Martin Davidson now runs the label. We expect them to arrive, customs permitting, in the next couple of weeks, along with restocks of a large number of releases. In short, the new titles are:
MARCIO MATTOS "SOL[os]" (c1998-2010) Emanem 5035
JOHN RUSSELL / PHIL DURRANT / JOHN BUTCHER "Conceits" (1987/1992) Emanem 5036
MILO FINE FREE JAZZ ENSEMBLE "Earlier Outbreaks of Iconoclasm" (1976-8) Emanem 5206 2-CD set
