  Shaking the Squid - May 9 2015

By philz 2015-05-09
: ()

As many customers know, we sell on 3 market places: our own website, Discogs.com, and Amazon.com. Of course we'd prefer customer to use our own website as we put our best effots into our own site, and we don't have to share our sale with another marketplace. But we also understand that Discogs and Amazon have large customer bases, and particularly with Discogs, many customers use the site to track their own collections. Our own customers are also, typically, more interested in new releases, while the marketplaces bring a broader range of items, from some of our oldest to the most recent.

Squidco was developed with the idea of maintaining back catalog in stock (I emphasize that because many other sites list back catalog, but frustratingly don't actually have stock of the items they list). We look at our catalog as a resource where older releases are available for new listeners just coming to the music, and new releases are for more seasoned customers looking to stay current or find something extraordinary in the wonderfully creative music that keeps charging forward. Our product codes start in the hundreds, the smallest number still available is 00480, coincidentally enough John Zorn's First Recordings 1973 on the Tzadik label, while current product codes are in the 21,000 range. We've listed a lot of products over the years, but we still care for those early and amazing releases that remain in print.

Important music has no end date, it continues to excite and inform years after its release. Which is why John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Henry Cow, Spontaneous Music Ensemble, or Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza are as relevant now as they were in their prime years. Which is why we continue to physically stock as many gems from our earliest years as possible. Whenever we complete a listing for a new item, we link it to as many as 15 recommendations from our catalog, and we hope customers look through those suggestions as a useful way to search through our back catalog, or to find items that they might have missed otherwise.

New @ Squidco:

This week Squidco welcomes Herbal International, a Malaysian label located in Kuala Lumpur, with an extremely interesting selection of releases focused electroacoustic composition and improvisation. We've carried a couple of their releases in the past, which we picked up from artists like Eric La Casa or Jean-Luc Guionnet. We're going straight to the source now, with more than a dozen albums that are representative of their area of interest, and which intersect with our catalog. In particular, there are two releases from Eric La Casa, one solo and one in a duo, both using field recordings in organized sound compositions. Frans de Waard's Beequeen album from 1995 is also included, a beautiful album of tones and drones, which was remastered for the label. Sound artist Eric Cordier is represented in two albums, one solo and one with Seijiro Murayama. Noisier material comes from Zbigniew Karkowski in a duo with Kelly Churko. Typically playing saxophone in unusual ways, Jean-Luc Guionnet is represented in a solo album of organ (which coincidentally is John Zorn's latest favorite instrument for solo performance). Roel Meelkop also provides a solo album of fascinating sound journeys, ranging from very quiet minimal work to very large drones and rumbles. Label leader Goh Lee Kwang also has two albums, one a solo improvisation with a mixer, in the vein of Toshimaru Nakamura (Good Vibrations); and the other a very strange album of synthetic sounds abusing a Roland Jupiter analogue synth by passing it through Max/MSP (Hands).

Aum Fidelity has moved distributors again, and we're able to pick up a very limited stock of back catalog. Check our recently restocked page in the next week or so to see what we actually receive - if you see a title you're interested in grab it quickly, because we're not sure how long back catalog items will be available.

For lovers of the bizarre and unusual, check the samples for Papal Bull on the Discombulate album Argot of Incomprehension, where the UK duo of Jon Marshall and Joe Murray phlegmatically speak, spit, and garble their way through 14 bizarre tracks accompanied by highly processed audio sources. It's really quite strange.
