"The Pennsylvania improvising trio of Kevin Sims, James Searfoss, and Justin Dorsey continue to hone their fierce and potent relationship with texture, rhythm, and amorphous sound forms. This album is laced with musical paths travelled and skirted, conversant with drone, electroacoustics, and free jazz.
"Glint" functions as a bit of an overture, and as "Once Threw" expands on the clatter and clamber, Dorsey's bass becomes a focal point, taking a prominent position in the mix and making radically clear signal-point gestures that bring about significant changes, exploring new rooms and leading the way into them.
The arresting "Chiffon Blues" opens with Sims' psaltery, leading a mournful bluesy atmosphere into melodic sweetness, tumbling into undulating percussion held lovingly by a walking bassline and Searfoss' honest and energetic saxophone playing. The assuredly paced "Until" orbits eccentrically between vertiginous sustained passages and swirling, fragmented chases of resonant metallic percussion and mysterious and distant textural tape loops.
Tension is a central tenet of this trio, and here they keep things so taut that an engaging dynamic balance is maintained throughout."-Notice Reordings
Artist Biographies
• Show Bio for Kevin Sims "Kevin Sims is a percussionist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and flimmaker living in Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania. Kevin's recent work includes the solo percussion project Yarrow Canon; the free improvisation album There Will Always Be Instruments with the Spherule Trio (Patrick Shiroishi, sax-ophones; Lucas Brode, guitar and screwdrivers); the multimedia documentary projects Battle Hymn of the Public (released on Orb Tapes) and Our Sense of the Real; a collaboration with composer Scott Wollschleger and poet Abby Minor on a percussion monodrama titled We Have Taken and Eaten; the founding and organizing of Open Music, which is a concert series and ensemble; and being one half, along with James Searfoss, of the noise-improvisation duo Moth Bucket. Since leaving New York for Pennsylvania in 2011, Kevin has been studying the intersections between avant-garde music and politics. This study has revealed music, art making, and politics to be wide-spread and everyday social practices rather than professional specialties. Each of these practices lives as much from caring for the social situation in which it brews as for the development of its material. Kevin has been led on this study by the work of many artists and thinkers, most notably the visual artist and founding Situationist Asger Jorn; pianist, composer and band leader Sun Ra; poet and philosopher Fred Moten; and the polyrhythmic political theorizing of Hannah Arendt. Kevin studied percussion at Manhattan School of Music in New York and on a DAAD fellowship at the Musikhochschule Freiburg in Germany. Kevin was a founding member of the contemporary music ensemble Red Light New Music in New York, and of the international percussion group Ensemble XII." ^ Hide Bio for Kevin Sims • Show Bio for James Searfoss "James Searfoss is a musician based in Harrisburg, PA working primarily with found sound. His solo output as Teuthis Galore relies on sample mangling and layering while his duo Moth Bucket (with Kevin Sims) inexplicably drifts between free jazz and drone. Searfoss also runs the experimental record label Orb Tapes which has been releasing all stripes of experimental sounds since 2015. teuthis galore, moth bucket." ^ Hide Bio for James Searfoss • Show Bio for Justin Dorsey "Justin Dorsey is a graduate of Penn State University with a Bachelor of Music in double bass performance from Rob Nairn's studio, as well as a Master of Music from Duquesne University as a student of Pittsburgh Symphony bassist Aaron White. Justin has been a staple of the State College and Centre County music scenes since a teenager, playing in everything from philharmonic orchestra to honky tonk band. Currently a member of several ensembles and collectives, you can hear Justin holding down the low end with The Scrapplers, Mothbucket, and Open Music, as well as Penn State Centre Stage and School of Theatre productions. Former appointments include Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra, and the Penn's Woods Music Festival. Justin offers lessons in double bass, electric bass, acoustic and electric guitar." ^ Hide Bio for Justin Dorsey
