Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

Spectral Warrior Mythos 2 marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of The Flying Luttenbachers, capturing the transition from their 2017 New York City reincarnation to a Chicago-based unit following Weasel Walter's relocation in 2021. The shift wasn't without its challenges, but then again, this project has never been about taking the easy way out. (And, yes, Walter has long since moved from drums to guitar.)

The call for new superheroes was answered by veteran drummer Charlie Werber (Lovely Little Girls, Guzzlemug), whose precision and dexterity elevated the band's dynamic. The trio underwent a rotation of bass players-including two past Luttenbachers-before solidifying its lineup with Luke Polipnick, a jazz/metal shredder known for his work in Abhorrent Expanse and various other sonic ventures.

Honing their arrangements through sporadic gigs, the trio locked in their sound with intense focus. However, after years of service, Werber is stepping down, passing the drum throne to James Paul Nadien, who will debut with the band on their upcoming tour with Melt-Banana.

Spectral Warrior Mythos 2 is a ferocious live-in-the-studio recording, delivered with no overdubs, capturing the band's intricate structures and relentless energy. Walter, Polipnick, and Werber attack the music with the destruktiv zeal that has long defined The Flying Luttenbachers' legacy.

Artist Biographies

"Weasel Walter (real name Walter Wyzowski) is a composer and instrumentalist who founded the band The Flying Luttenbachers in Chicago in 1991 with a current member of Cellular Chaos and Behold...The Arctopus. Over the years, The Flying Luttenbachers included noted Dylan Posa, and Michael Colligan, while creating a body of music drawing equally from no wave, death metal, gamelan, noise music, hardcore punk and modern classical. Walter moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2003, where he formed the latest of many Luttenbachers lineups, remaining on percussion with the addition of bassist Mike Green (Burmese), and virtuoso guitarist Ed Rodriguez (ex-Colossamite, Gorge Trio). Singular guitar phenomenon Mick Barr (Krallice, Octis, Orthrelm) joined the group in 2005. The Flying Luttenbachers ceased to operate in late 2007. On November 25, 2009, Weasel Walter announced that he was moving to New York City to join the band Behold... The Arctopus on drums and will be writing "new, more extreme material from scratch." He also formed Cellular Chaos with Marc Edwards (drummer), Admiral Grey and Ceci Moss."

Adhering to the tenets of "Dissonance, Speed, Aggression, Weirdness, and Singularity", Weasel Walter leads his Flying Luttenbachers in their 15th album of no wave, punk jazz & brutal prog, Weasel switching to guitar and yielding the drum chair to Sam Ospovat, as the band rips through ridiculously complex twists and turns, even taking on Albert Ayler's strange '66/'67 musical suites.

This puzzling display of punk/jazz surrealism is masterminded by Nondor Nevai on drums and vocals, featuring Weasel Walter on bass and legendary journeyman Kenny Millions (aka Keshavan Maslak) on guitar and reeds, a sort of unholy fusion between extreme metal, bludgeoning noise rock, free jazz, black humor and true stream-of-consciousness improvisation.
