Descriptions, Reviews, &c.

"In the past, this inner sea was both a passageway connecting communities and an obstacle separating them."-Tsss Tapes

"On Tetsuya Nakayama's Edo Wan¸ water flutters its wings while metals trickle and splash. The details of human voices get lost in the din while incidental rustles and crackles hold the mic. Occasionally, melodic sounds enter, acting as incidental noise to the dance of liquids and surfaces. The tape captures mundane situations and settings, yet there's something in the assembly of concrete and environmental sounds that re-enchants the ordinary. More than documenting their surroundings, the Chiba, Japan-based producer showcases a way of listening to what's around. Water flowing at different rates and intensities becomes as much of an occasion as musical notes. It chimes with lower case music, but Nakayama's elegant prose of discrete sounds holds time like a sentence cut short."-Daryl Worthington, The Quietus

"Turning discarded sounds into a form of stumbling poetry", Christian Schiefner (aka Chemiefaserwerk) and Michal Fundowicz (aka Turmeric Acid) use cassette tapes, objects and field recordings (eg. a kitchen timer, a kalimba pattern, a Polish instructional tape, Croatian field recording) to create fascinating transformations of sonic environments in two engaging aural journeys.
Ristic, Manja / Joana Guerra / Veronica Cerrotta
Slani pejzazi [CASSETTE + DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
TSSS Tapes brought together these three performers -- Belgrade violinist and sound artist Manja Ristić; Lisbon exploratory improviser and cellist Joana Guerra; and Argentine pianist and sound artist living in Rio de Janeiro, Veronica Cerrotta -- developing these two intensely detailed compositions of acoustic performance, field recordings and acousmatic sound.
Eventless Plot
Schemata [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
The Thessaloniki trio Vasilis Liolios, Aris Giatas and Yiannis Tsirikoglou, aka Eventless Plot, pays great attention to sonic details through experimental sound and sonic expression, here in a two-part work performed on percussion, analog modular synth, tapes/Revox A-77, field recordings, electromagnetic mic & objects, joined by double bassist Antonis Argyriou for the 2nd part.
Jerman, Jeph / Ted Byrnes
Passenger [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Two western-US, like-minded sound artists and improviser who started their musical lives as drummer/percussionists, Jeph Jerman and Ted Byrnes present nine relatively succinct tracks of unusual and unidentifiable sources, typically formed around a rhythmic center and always actively engaging, finding logic in curious or even chaotic interaction.
Various Artists
Free Percussion/Water [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Demonstrating the striking diversity modern solo percussionists present, the Italian tape label TSSS Tapes compiles an international set of solo works from explorers Tim Daisy, Jeph Jerman, Ted Byrnes, Wojtek Kurek, Clinton Green, Rie Nakajima, Emilio Berne, Shakeeb Abu Hamdan, Lucie Nezri, Karen Willems, Paolo Sanna, Li Qing, Carlos Godinho, and Rodrigo Vieira.
Nakajima, Rie / Takahiro Kawaguchi
Utsuho [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Rapid and lucid activity of mechanical and organic activity, a mad mechanism under the control of master machinists perking the ears in inexplicable ways, from the collaboration of Japanese sound artists Rie Nakajima and Takahiro Kawaguchi, their uncredited sources seemingly a mix of motors, bells, squeaky toys, material flurries, whistles, &c. &c.; playfully fascinating.
Jacques, Anne-F / Takamitsu Ohta
Oto to Secchi [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Using small objects and contact microphones to create peacefully clacking, mewling and idiosyncratic utterances, sound artists Takamitsu Ohta and Anne-Francoise Jacques developed this installation shown in 2019 at the Bonjour! Gendaibunmei gallery in Kyoto, recorded by Jacques as a tour of the various sonic manifestations that a visitor to the gallery might experience.
Corcoran, Kevin / Giacomo Salis / Paolo Sanna
Sul Filo [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Initiating like a jet shaking the sky, the trio of Kevin Corcoran on percussion & objects, Giacomo Salis on percussion, objects & field recordings and Paolo Sanna on percussion & objects create otherworldly sonic environments that project collapsing and ringing events above often turbulent foundations, creating side-long journeys that engage through mysterious and surmisable sound.
Olive, Tim / Kayu Nakada
Entenka [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Applying techniques similar to those of the prepared piano, Japanese experimental artist Kayu Nakada uses circuit bending--circuit boards from electronic instruments short circuited for new effects--joining forces with Japan-based Canadian electronic instrument maker Tim Olive (845 Audio) for four works of intriguingly interactive glitch, hum, static and sonic inexplicables.
Jacques, Anne-Francoise / Tim Olive
Bistre [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
The fourth release from the long-standing sonic research duo of Montreal sound artist Anne-F Jacques, who uses "rotating devices" based around small amplified motors, and Montreal ex-patriot living in Kobe, Japan Tim Olive (845 Audio), using magnetic pickups on objects and self-built instruments, here in six richly detailed and sometimes curiously menacing recordings.
Nakajima, Rie
Fusuma [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Working with sculpture and objects in sound installations and live performance, Rie Nakajima captured this appealing set of kinetic performances named for the objects featured in each: a handle of a Japanese sliding door (fusuma), Japanese rice bowls, coils, jars, shells, flower pots, plastic bags, tin foil, tin cans, chopsticks, a bamboo pot, stones, cups, &c.
Jerman, Jeph
Popular Fictions [CASSETTE w/ DOWNLOAD]
(Tsss Tapes)
Two side-long compositions from audio explorer Jeph Jerman, assembled using recordings of objects including "mouth, stone, wood, glass, metal, paper, plastic, radio" plus field recordings made through the spring and summer of 2020 in and around Cottonwood, AZ, joined with audio contributions from Doug Theriault, Chris Reider, Julie Schubert, &c.
