Zuydervelt, Rutger / Hugo Dijkstal / Peter Hollo: BERG (Music for a film by Joke Olthaar) (Machinefabriek)

Two versions of the soundtrack to the Dutch movie BERG composed by Rutger Zuydervelt, the first rearranging the tracks to the piece to create a long-form work that maintains the meditative qualities of the movie; then an early score proposal and more active concept than the final work, developed with recordings of improvisations from cellist Peter Hollo.

Artist Biographies:

"Machinefabriek is the alias of Rutger Zuydervelt. Rutger's music combines elements of ambient, noise, minimalism, drone, field recordings and electro-acoustic experiments. His pieces can be heard as an attempt to create sonic environments for the listener to dwell in. Finding tension in texture, tone and timing, the result can be very minimalistic at first glance, but reveals itself upon closer listening. The devil is in the details.

Rutger was born in 1978 in Apeldoorn (The Netherlands) and now resides in Rotterdam. He started recording as Machinefabriek in 2004. After a series of self released cd-rs, his official debut Marijn was issued in 2006, with great critical acclaim. Since than, a solid stream of music was released on labels such as Type, Important, Home Normal, 12K, Entr'acte, Dekorder, Miasmah, Consouling Sounds, Experimedia and Staalplaat. He performed all over the globe, from Canada to Israel and from Russia to Japan.

Rutger collaborated (on record and/or live) with numerous artists, such as Steinbrüchel, Jaap Blonk, Aaron Martin, Peter Broderick, Frans de Waard, Mats Gustafsson, Steve Roden, Gareth Davis, Stephen Vitiello, Michel Banabila, Dirk Serries and Dead Neanderthals, amongst many others.

He frequently works with film makers, like Makino Takashi, Mike Hoolboom, John Price, Paul Clipson and Chris Teerink, for whom he composed a soundtrack for his documentary about Sol LeWitt. Rutger also recorded the music for the Canadian drama The Cold and the Quiet from 2014. Furthermore, his music was used in Edward Burtynsky's Watermark, the drama Stone (with Robert DeNiro and Edward Norton) and Josh Fox' influential Gasland and Gasland Part II documentaries. Besides films, Rutger also composes music for dance pieces, like Alix Eynaudi and Kris Verdonck's EXIT (premiéred at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin), Alexander Whitley's The Measures Taken (for the Royal Opera in London) and Beheld (for Candoco Dance Company), and multiple pieces by Spanish/Dutch choreographer Iván Pérez. Then there's Rutgers installation work, in which the dialogue with the environment plays an important role. He did projects for Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, NAi (Dutch Architecture Institute), the new Armando Museum MOA, Sounds Like Audio Art in Saskatoon (Canada), the Into the Great Wide Open Festival, Netwerk in Aalst (Belgium) and children's museum Villa Zebra in Rotterdam."

"Peter Hollo, is a cellist known for FourPlay String Quartet, Tangents and many other ensembles. His own solo project, Raven, started as an outlet for experiments in electronic music in about 1997, raven continues to reflect his musical interests, which can be seen in some detail via his radio show Utility Fog. Tools include cello, piano, found objects, looping and other fx pedals and laptop programming/processing. In addition to his bands, Peter is known for countless collaborations, including regular appearances live & recorded with Sophie Hutchings and Close to Forever, as well as: a live improvisation on the stage of the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall with Lisa Gerrard (view on YouTube); a live solo accompaniment to an exclusive hallucinatory prose-poem by Grant Morrison, also in the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall; live and recorded work with Oren Ambarchi, Exhibitionist, Setec, Manyfingers, X, Shoeb Ahmad, Ollie Bown, Deborah Conway, Funkenbubble/Kabel, Gerling, the Hinterlandt Arkestra, Karma County, Jimmy Little, Monsieur Camembert, Ollo, Part Timer, Paul Mac, Purdy, the Stiff Gins, Sub Bass Snarl, Holly Throsby, Tooth, Waikiki, The Whitlams..."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"This isn't a regular 'original film score' album. After working on the sound design and music for Joke Olthaar's slow-paced BERG film, Hugo Dijkstal and Rutger Zuydervelt (aka Machinefabriek) decided to re-arrange the sound into one long 30-minute piece. In the film, Hugo's auditory magic is blended with Rutger's minimalist drones to create an immersive bed for director Joke Olthaar and cinematographer André Scheuder's striking black and white footage of the Slovenian Triglav mountain range. To best translate the experience into a sound-only piece, the duo decided to create a new aural adaptation of the film by editing the foley and score into a new longform composition. So despite the fact that you might not call this an 'official' soundtrack album, the meditative quality of the film is accurately preserved. 'A movie for the ears' might be a trite description, but it definitely applies to this audio journey.

The second track of the album is a different beast. Created in a much earlier stage of the BERG film, it was an attempt to create a soundtrack with guest Peter Hollo (Tangents, FourPlay String Quartet, raven) on cello. Peter and Rutger were in contact for years already, but this was their first time working together. Inspired by Joke Olthaar's ideas about her film and what its music could embody, Peter recorded a few cello improvisations from his hometown in Australia. These recordings were re-edited and combined with Rutger's electronics, into a half hour piece that served as a proposed base for the movie's soundtrack. Compared to the first track on this album, BERG (score sketch) is a much more dynamic and (relatively) dramatic affair. Further in the working process of the film, it was decided that the music needed another direction - a more minimal approach was needed, an approach that was more about adding texture and very subtle colour, and blending seamlessly with Hugo Dijkstal's mix of nature sounds. Luckily, the piece with Peter Hollo is preserved here on this album, because as a listening experience it's a very welcome inclusion to this album."-Machinefabriek

"In 2019 Rutger Zuydervelt, aka Machinefabriek, contacted me to ask if I would be interested in recording some cello for a film soundtrack he was preparing. I'm a big fan of Rutger's work and got to work recording a series of ideas based on a concept Rutger had in mind, inspired by Joke Olthaar's ideas about her film and what its music could embody.

Luckily, the piece I did with Rutger is preserved here on this album, because as a listening experience it's a very welcome inclusion to this album. A journey at high altitude seen through the eyes of three mysteriously connected hikers. After a coincidental meeting high in the mountains, we follow three hikers on their personal odysseys. The levels of concentration they exhibit in trying to avoid mistakes makes their experience of the overwhelming landscape even more intense."- Joke Olthaar
